The waters of the Saronic Gulf is the way into the Greek waters. The island of Aegina which is the island found in many Greek myths. From here travel by land to the Aphaia Temple which is one of the highest points in Greece. The temple is a great place to experience the lovely and colorful sunsets that a Greece vacation has to offer. The bays of the Peloponnesus are great in the summer months and a unique end to a weekend sailing adventure.
Sail from Epidauros to Aegina. This is a tiny port extremely close to the shrine of Aeskepios. This is the god of healing and there is also a classical amphitheater there. It is rumored that you can whisper at the bottom of the theater and it can be heard on the top floor of the theatre. Another half day sail bring you to your next stop on your Greece vacation. Poros is east and is an old town along a narrow river and leaves toward of the best parts of Greece – the Hydra. Hydra is hard to see until you are right there on top of it. It has been a trading center for centuries. Here many yachts and sail boats come to rest. There are no cars and use old school mule transportation. The harbor and the beaches are beautiful and unforgettable. This is a favorite place for tourists and ferries. It is extremely busy at during the day and dead silent at night. If you are looking to avoid the loud night life on your Greece vacation this is the place to do it.
Napilion resides north in the Saronic Gulf. There is an ancient Venetian village which is up on a hill. There is also a fortress called the Palamidi. Napilion sister island is named Spetsae and has yet to move into the modern ages. There are large boatyards. Many still build old wooden fishing boats and related fishing gear. There are quiet coves and anchorages where a person can wander, reflect, and be alone just with their thoughts.
Remember sailing is a sport not just a hobby. To sail the seas on a Greece vacation is extremely difficult and not for the novice sailor. The summer especially has some fairly brutal weather which is full of storms, and high tides. Needless to say while the people of the area is welcoming, the water is less then friendly. Greece is a great place to vacation with or without your sail boat.
